"Please don't hit me" Biking a rural highway (Denmark Day 11)
Admittedly, most of the ride took place on roads with little to no car traffic, and safe drivers who gave a wide berth at that. The majority of my day went by (slowly because my knee hurt) with lovely rolling hills of grains, occasional shade trees, and my brain playing "Big Wheels Keep on Turnin'," BUT the final portion of the route to Korinth was on a shared highway with daredevil tour bus and semi truck drivers with way too much confidence that I wouldn't deviate an inch from the barely-there-shoulder line as they zoomed past me. Those last miles, though less steep than prior hills, had me praying, "Please don't hit me."
Here's an assortment of beautiful Danish countryside pics from the day. (Oh, and tired me buttoned up against the sun's vicious rays.)
(Surprise! It's pineapple icecream with chocolate and crunchy bits of something.)
If I had known we'd arrive to making our own beds (including putting on duvet covers while exhausted), I'd have steeled myself with that extra bit if reserve. Alas, I had not. So, I maybe drank a 6-pack of Heineken (and lots of water) to rehydrate and chill out upon arrival to Korinth. The hostel has these nifty skylights that transformed into princess balconies.
It was a tiny rural town with a busy car repair shop, a pizza place, a grocery store, some homes, and our work-in-progress remodel hostel. If I'd known we'd be at a step away from a summer camp cabin in the woods (30 people, 3 toilets), I'd have brought a speaker and a karaoke list. #SummerCampKidSkillz
Everyone made it to Korinth without major injury. Floris, our Dutch coordinator extraordinaire and emergency cycle repair wizard, drove our luggage from Svendborg to Korinth. (He's with Austin Adventures.) Exhausted and in pain, the knee I tweaked not running over a child in Copenhagen formed an alliance with my arthritic big toes to declare a strike. I took 2 ibuprofen and said I'd renew negotiations in the morning.
Next up: Getting to Odense.
Random pic of the day: This beetle pretty much hung out here on the wall the entire time we ate our after-ride snacks.
